Biography

Princess Shikishi was the the third daughter born of Emperor Go-Shirakawa (1127-1192.) Shikishi never married and instead was appointed the head priestess of Kamo Shrine in Kyoto, and would later become a nun. [Source: Sato, Hiroaki. Japanese Women Poets: An Anthology. New York: Routledge, 2015.]
