Biography

Ben no Naishi was born into the literarily distinguished Fujiwara family. An active member in literary communities, she participated in renga -- poetry writing groups, forty-four of her waka were included in imperial collections, and she wrote the Ben no Naishi Nikki, a literary account of her time as controller-handmaid to Emperor Go-Fukakusa.
