Biography

Empress Jito ruled from 689 to 695 following the death of her husband, Emperor Tenmu. Both the Man'yoshu and Hyakunin Isshu contain poems attributed to her. She ruled from Fujiwara-kyo (present-day Kashihara, Nara prefecture).
